Arriving at a size count of an e-Learning project

stimating a size count for a typical pure software project can be much simpler than estimating the size of an e-Learning project.

For the less informed a project size count is usually a number or metric which indicates how big or small a fixed price project is. So for example a project manager understands the value of the project when he understand s that the project is approximately 10000 LOC (Lines of Code). The terminology and concept of Lined of Code works great in a pure software development projectized environment since that becomes the base measure for all development.
However it's not that easy in an eLearning project. Description of an eLearning project is not simply done in lines of code because of the different elements that go in making an eLearning course.
Consider the different resources that come into picture when designing a course - Instructional designers, Content writers, graphic and illustrative artists and designers and finally technology programmers . The deliverable from each of these is different and in different formal hence arriving at a standard metric or a number is even more difficult.
So here is what we do in such cases to arrive at a number which can describe the amount of work involved quantified in a number.
Typically in this case we list down the important attributes and features specifications of the product and assign a complexity level to each attribute. Based on the complexity a number is assigned to each, which is multiplied by the total number of such features and a size count is arrived.
Now this number is not any arbit number, this is the average hours which an average resource would take to create these features. These numbers should be common for the entire company and become useful to track productivity as well. So if you have a size count of 1000 which means that you can complete the project in 1000 hours if you do this well within time then a quick observation would tell you that you have delivered the project profitably.
