Make no mistake; the Toshiba Satellite P300-134 is sexier than a nude Scarlett Johansson riding bareback on a tiger. Well actually nothing is that sexy.
That said, having barely escaped coming in dead last in our CPU test we began to worry about the much acclaimed Toshiba and were hoping for some redemption in the form of 3DMark. Sadly, every run we tried ended in a BSOD and some nautical dialogue.
We tried reinstalls, fixes, hacks and voodoo magic but all to no avail. It seems to be something to do with our particular sample and the pathetic Vista Home it comes with, immature drivers FTW.
What we had then, was a beautiful looking notebook that couldn't run 3DMark, had a lousy CPU but still remained, in our opinion, a really great choice. Now before the readying of ye olde pitch forks let me explain why. You see, despite poor old 3Dmark's failure to launch and the notebooks primitive little brain, it was still more than a little nippy. It burns through Vistas bloat, it plays games beyond its league but most of all, it's half the price of the two notebooks that do beat it and cheaper than the LG which it slapped around.
But it's more than just value for money; it's the entire approach Toshiba took that makes this laptop special. It comes in its box with a charger, a manual and one CD as should be law with notebooks. The desktop has minimal bloatware installed and the notebook can be completely customized within minutes. The P300 it is aimed squarely at average Joe and gives the common man everything they need.
Good performance, excellent sound, crisp image quality and not too shabby performance, all wrapped up in a beautiful package. Hardly entry level, this is a serious amount of bang for your buck.
