Volunteer Child Avocacy Training Event
This is a Volunteering only (NO PAY) position. Prior to becoming a Certified Volunteer Child Advocate, you will have to go through a mandatory orientation and training process. This posting is for Florida residents in Saint Lucie, Okeechobee, Martin, and Indian River counties. Candidates must have some experience is computers and emails to be a Volunteer Child Advocate. You must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Training Details: This is a three day training event. The 5th and 7th are from 5:30pm - 8:30pm and the 9th is from 9am - 4pm. Training is in a relaxing environment with refreshments so please dress casual. There will be hourly breaks and a break for lunch. Training will cover things such as: recognizing case notes, activity logs, dependency reports, court orders, permanency notices, educational advocacy, and the path of a case. The perspective and experiences of licensed Child Advocacy Managers (CAMs) and licensed Attorneys will help shape your understanding as to what your role will be as a GAL Volunteer. Some of the training is interactive to stimulate and facilitate communication and understanding which is very important in child advocacy. Through this training, you will gain a fresh understanding of why it is important to advocate for children that are in the system. Volunteer Responsibilities: You will be expected to sign for at least one case. As a Volunteer Child Advocate, you will have to commit an average of 10 to 15 hours per month for a minimum of one year. You will be responsible for making at least one visit to the child(ren's) placement every 30 days. You will be gathering information on how the child(ren) is living and socializing, how they are doing in school, if they are getting or need any medical and or behavioral treatment. Upon completion of each visit, you will fill out and forward a visitation report on the information you have gathered to your Child Advocacy Manager (CAM) for processing. You will participate in staffings where you will make recommendations and discuss visits for pending court dates with the help of your CAM and a staffed attorney which makes up your team. You will be expected to attend court where you will testify to your findings. You will be expected to attend in-service training to maintain your certification. Further information such as training dates, locations, times, and certifications will be made available. You will be expected to sign for a case within 14 days of completing the training. This is a very worthwhile opportunity to make a true difference in a child's life. Thank YOU in advance for what you do and having an interest in the 19th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem.
