Handmade | Mindmade
In a time when technological advances have us juggling ever-smaller devices that promise better, more connected lives, and ordering goods from halfway around the globe, Handmade | Mindmade is a rare opportunity. This exhibition features more than 40 handcrafted wood furniture pieces made by graduates of the internationally renowned College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program in Mendocino County, founded by James Krenov in 1981. Students invest countless hours in perfecting works that will last generations, and are educated both with technique, and an acute sensitivity to tools and materials, craft and personal expression. In addition to foregrounding the completed works that emerge from this program, the exhibition will shed light on the learning process. A selection of hand tools, design drawings, and in-progress pieces will give viewers an insight into the works' making, from design to construction of maquettes, from wood selection to hand-cut joinery. Accompanying the exhibition is a full week of programming grappling with many of the most pressing issues in contemporary craft: staying alive as a craftsperson in this economy; the education of makers for the 21st century; and the many ways that technology and craft intersect in the making of objects. www.handmademindmade.com
