What you think constitutes as the definition of a gadget is probably not exactly what it used to mean. The origins of the gadget can date back as far as the 19th century to around 1886 when it was first documented in a French book called 'Spunyarn and Spindrift, A sailor boy's log of a voyage out and home in a China tea-clipper' a thoroughly good read. Back then a gadget was more recognised as a balloon *1824* or a match *1827*, a typewriter *1829*, the first electric dynamo *1831* or the stapler in *1841* but this is not what our generation thinks when we hear the word 'gadget'. For us it's all about those little novelty items that are good for the home or the office for a bit of a laugh, or the other side of it as a piece of technology that has become totally integrated into our lives like mobile telephones, mp3 players, satellite navigational systems, or what you are reading this from currently.
Over time they have become faster, smaller, more intercut and more useful, though gadgets aren't immaculately conceived, in spite of what seems like lightning-speed development, production and distribution they take a lot of time and careful planning. So that new gizmo you'll love or hate for a few months before discarding it for the newer model months later has actually received countless hours of attention and forethought from a sizable team of designers, engineers and researchers.
Way before most products hit the retail shelf, a company's design team and even outside design consultancies spend around a year or over on them trying to work out kinks and design flaws, though this matter is up for debate on how well they actually achieve on that front, the matter of the fact is that they do spend a considerable amount of time testing them, so don't be too quick to hate. They are also usually done in complete secrecy which can stump development but the reason being is because new technologies can become so sort after it could make your gadget prevail over a competitor easily.
Gadgets are growing in definition every day, as the term begins to lose its original meaning it is becomingly being seen more as a piece of technology that can either attach to a previous design or an electronic device that can create a singular atmosphere where it does not need constant interaction from an external source to operate.
They have become a critical part of our society and will do... well forever; they work to deliver an array of human desires from easier, quicker results to sources of entertaining and artistic devices.
