Ever since we subscribed to HD cable a few years ago, we've had intermittent reception problems with some channels - especially CW (formerly the WB). The cable guy installed a signal amp a while back and that helped make things a little better. Beginning about a week ago, however, the reception began to REALLY suck. We got lots of blanking out, pixelation, and loss of audio. I finally decided to replace the 22-year-old coax wiring in my house earlier tonight - after the cable guy said that the problem was "inside wiring". Well, after installing the new wiring and connectors, the picture went completely BLANK! I was like WTF?! I tried replaced the coax connectors again and still had NO picture. Then, just for @#$ !s and grins, I unplugged the signal amplifier. Bam! We now have a picture - and a much better one at that - again. After speaking with Matt, it turns out that there IS such a thing as having too strong of a signal. I'm leaving the amp disconnected for now. Note that a couple of the above values - in orange - are now slightly below the acceptable range. I'm going to see if the cable guy can adjust the amp to get everything just right sometime later today...
For those of you with the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD box, you can enter the status/diagnostic screen by performing the following actions on the box (not the remote):
1. Press and hold the Select button until an envelope (or "new email-like") icon flashes on the screen.
2. Now press the Info button.
3. You can scroll through the various diagnostic screens using the volume buttons.
