Digital Forensics Industry- the New Age Sherlock

Snooping around with a magnifying glass is passé! The new age detective follows digital prints rather than foot prints. Digital forensics is the process of uncovering and interpreting electronic data for use in a court of law. Like pathological forensics does a post-mortem of a body to find clues, digital forensics dissect phones, laptops, hard-drives etc to find any data which might help contribute towards solving a crime? There has been a boom in this industry and it is still growing, for the uses of digital forensics are many.

Moreover, the coming years are likely to have everything 'smart', cars and refrigerators included. This means that we will leave a trail of data wherever we go, whatever we do. This offers a huge scope of growth for the digital forensic industry. This is something to be grateful about, since the benefits are great. The most obvious one is location provenance, which, in simple words, refers to proof of your location. This can also be used for national security. For example, a system can be developed to show if someone or some device has gone through a checkpoint in secured areas like military checkpoints, and inside certain wings of buildings.

The same technology can be used in the food and medicine industries to track supply chains and find out if the goods are coming from reliable sources or not. However, this industry faces its share of problems, the biggest one being the 'cloud'. The cloud is simply some online space that one can use to store data. Since the cloud is easily accessible nowadays and one doesn't need to carry a physical storage device around, people prefer to store all their information online.

Earlier one could get a warrant and search the laptop disk of the suspect, but with everything online, law enforcement faces a dead end.The cloud is somewhat like the Swiss Bank- You give some money and your secrets stay in a vault. Plus bankers won't tell the investigator who their customer was.

Another challenge is how to prevent leakage since even junk data or deleted files can be recovered. Despite these challenges, the digital forensic industry is a boon, not just by helping us, but providing interesting career options like Forensic Computer Analyst, Technology Security Specialist, Database Analyst, Computer Network Forensic Analyst, Security Engineer etc.

So chuck your trench coat and sit in front of that laptop instead. It's the digital age!
